Former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to receive the prestigious NAACP Chairman’s Award during the 2025 NAACP Image Awards. This award recognizes individuals who have excelled in public service and leveraged their platforms to drive meaningful change. Harris will be honored for her relentless dedication to justice, equality, and the betterment of society.

A Trailblazer in Politics

Kamala Harris has had a remarkable career, breaking barriers at every step. She made history as the first woman and the first person of color to serve as Vice President of the United States. Before that, she served as a U.S. Senator from California and the state’s Attorney General. Harris was also the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in the 2024 election, becoming the first Black and South Asian woman to be on a major party’s presidential ticket.

Champion of Justice and Equality

Throughout her career, Harris has been a force for change. As Vice President, she championed reproductive rights, gun safety, voting rights, and economic opportunity. She played a key role in the administration’s efforts to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and established the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Harris also led the “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour, visiting Planned Parenthood clinics across the country.

Education and Early Career

Harris’ journey began with a strong educational background. She graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later earned her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She started her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office before moving to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, where she was elected District Attorney in 20035. Harris then served as California’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2017 before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016.

“Vice President Kamala Harris is more than a leader — she is a force of change, driven by an unwavering passion to shape a brighter, more equitable future. It is with great honor that we present her with the Chairman’s Award at this year’s NAACP Image Awards, celebrating her relentless dedication to justice, equality, and the betterment of our society,” Leon W. Russell, chair of the NAACP’s national board of directors, said in a statement Monday.

Other winners of the Chairman’s prize have included former President Barack Obama, the late Rep. John Lewis and the late actor Ruby Dee.

The Image Awards, co-presented by the NAACP and BET, will take place on February 22nd at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California. Categories range from entertainer of the year to best movie to outstanding work of poetry. Harris’ legacy is built on courage, compassion, and a profound commitment to uplifting those who need it most. Her tireless advocacy for the most vulnerable among us has made her a beacon of hope and progress.

As Harris continues to inspire millions, her journey serves as a powerful testament to what can be achieved through resilience, strength, and unwavering dedication to justice and equality.
